Huawei's management planned a release of the flagship SoC Kirin 980 for September of this year, but some technical information about the mobile chip was previously declassified by insiders. A fresh report from informants close to Huawei's internal documentation sheds light on the key characteristics of the mobile processor and introduces its unique features.
It is known that the model Kirin 980 will contain four cores Cortex A55 and four Cortex A77. The latter will provide the chip with a maximum clock speed of 2.8 GHz versus 2.4 GHz for the Kirin 970, based on the "Cortex A53 + Cortex A73" bundle. The processor from Huawei, if you rely on insider information, will be produced on a 7-nm process by the efforts of TSMC. The most curious moment in the list of claimed features of the Kirin 980 is its own graphics processor, which will replace the Mali family. According to preliminary information, the Huawei video accelerator in terms of computing capabilities demonstrates superiority over the main competitor "in the face" of Adreno 630, reaching 50%. This will contribute to the proprietary GPU Turbo technology, whose support will become an integral part of the flagship SoC.\
In the case of HiSilicon, the Kirin 980 will not do without the support of the LTE Cat communication standard. 19, due to which the download of data from the mobile network will be possible at speeds up to 1.6 Gbit / s. Like its predecessor - the mobile chip Kirin 970 - the novelty will acquire a separate unit of NPU. A second-generation neuromorphic processor, responsible for the operation of AI-like algorithms, can boast an improved performance / energy efficiency ratio. His creation was engaged in the company Cambricon Technologies, for which the NPU-unit for the HiSilicon Kirin 970 chip is listed.
